The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps says it has destroyed illegal oil refining camps and arrested six suspects for bunkering and illegal refining of petroleum products in Olokpobiri, Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State.
The state Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr Chike Ikpeamonwu, who stated this on Saturday in Asaba, the state capital, said the suspects were between the ages of 18 and 30.
Ikpeamonwu said the activities of vandals had economic and health implications, noting that efforts were on to arrest those behind the illegal refining activities.
He stated, “It can’t be these once alone. These are field boys or field men. The big man is somewhere out there and we will get him.
“We are having challenges of logistics in accessing the difficult areas, where the illegal refining camps are situated. Some of the exhibits have been destroyed, while others are still at the camps.
“One of the suspects, Friday Akokoma, confessed that he got involved in oil refining to save for his mother’s funeral.
“He said his friend brought him to the camp to work and make money to use for his mother’s burial; imagine that!”
The NSCDC commandant added that the raid at the Kanto camps in Olokpobiri was one of many efforts to secure critical national infrastructure from vandalism. ,,
